Review: Geax Saguaro TNT 29er Tire: fast rolling no-hassle tubeless

Geax has been making the Saguaro tire in various configurations for quite a while, but their latest version—TNT—which stands for Tube/No Tube, makes a winner out of a tire that I once wrote off for being a do-anything tire which didn’t do any one thing well. The 2e version in the new TNT format was impressive—a fast roller and very durable tubeless alternative for the big-wheel crowd. The Geax Saguaro TNT 29er tire weighs 820 grams, costs $49.95 and is a full-size 2.2 inch casing.

The 29er version of the new Saguaro TNT is a 2.2-inch round profile tire with a number of small tread blocks with a uniform shape. The bead is a UST type profile, which makes it saddle up to a UST tubeless rim with a hand pump. The TNT aspect of the tire refers to they fact that the beads are UST type, while the casing is left unsealed (UST casings are sealed with an inner layer of rubber). A liquid sealant is recommended, and of course, Geax sells one called Pitstop TNT, which they recommend. We used Stan’s NoTubes, because that’s what we trust.



At 820 grams, plus 4 ounces of Stan’s sealant, I figured that the Saguaro TNT tire would accelerate like a steel tank track on my Pivot 42, but it surprised me with pretty quick acceleration and a super fast roll over a variety of surfaces from imbedded babyhead rocks to soft sand. The round profile of the casing and tread give resiliency to a tire casing that felt stiff when I was mounting them. The sidewalls seem reinforced, which is good for anyone who plans on riding epic trails in rocky terrain. The tread rubber is very durable. The nibs (thin whiskers of rubber which fill the air vents in the tire mold) were still on the front tire after 100 miles on the trail, and there were no abrasion marks anywhere on the sidewalls. Sweet!


Traction was available for climbing and the Saguaro tread pattern delivered on mixed sand and loose-rock ascents with pressures in the neighborhood of 30 to 32 psi. Braking was good, and cornering was predictable with a slight tendency to slide around when pushed hard. Like the Kenda Small Block 8, there is a limit to how much traction a lot of tiny tread blocks can deliver when there is a layer of sand or gravel on a hard pack surface. In these situations, the ample casing of the 2.2 inch gives a predictable slide until the Saguaro’s tiny tread cad reach the hard surface again. If you are a rock crawler—someone who spends a lot of time in Moab , Utah, or Fruita , Colorado , these are not the tires for you. The rounded profile and small knobs cannot hold up to the concentrated pressure of a small contact patch against a hard, non-conforming surface.

Schwalbe announced a voluntary recall, which has been running since the middle of August 2008. Schwalbe had stated that after prolonged use, it could be possible that the wires may separate from the bead and safe seating of the tire on the rim could be compromised.

The tires concerned are the wired versions of Big Betty, Muddy Mary, Al Mighty and Black Shark Mud for Downhill use. The Freeride versions of Big Betty and Muddy Mary (folding tires) are excluded from the recall. In the course of the recall dealers and consumers will get two new equivalent tires, of their choice, for every old tire returned.

New Schwalbe Downhill tires with gold labels distinguish the new Downhill versions of Big Betty and Muddy Mary. Schwalbe has revised the tires after a recall.

The Downhill versions of Big Betty and Muddy Mary have been delivered with this new specification since the middle of November 2008. Although, at first sight, the new tires resemble their predecessors, nevertheless, internally, they have been completely revised.

The Downhill tires are produced in a totally new manufacturing process. They are even more stable and hardwearing.

"The revised construction causes less load on the tires and adds more puncture protection. Besides which the tires are also easier to fit", explained Michael Kull of Schwalbe marketing, himself a keen Downhiller.

Two compounds are available: The Triple Nano Compound - a unique combination of three different rubber mixtures - combines low rolling resistance and good grip.
