Schwalbe Fat Albert All-Mountain Tire: Front and Rear Specific Treads

Schwalbe Re-Releases Fat Albert All-Mountain Tire: Front and Rear Specific Treads

(4/23/2009)
From :www.schwalbetires.com

Fat Albert is Schwalbe Tire's 2.4-inch big-volume, all-mountain tire (a smaller-casing version is also available) and remains its most popular seller in that genre because it is beautifully lightweight--in fact, the Fat Albert was one of the first large-volume, light weight tires. Now Schwalbe has created a whole new generation of all-rounders.

Front and rear-specific Fat Albert treads should make an already sweet riding tire perform even better.

Schwalbe has redesigned and developed every feature. Making the new Fat Albert Front und Rear tires noticeably grippier, much truer while cornering, quieter on hard surfaces and easier to ride at altitude: "like running on rails," promised Schwalbe technician Markus Hachmeyer. Freerider Johannes Fischbach admirably proved this: In May 2008 he became German 4Cross champion in Wilthen, Saxony using the new Alberts.

Strong Features: Snakeskin, Triple Nano-Compound and grippy U-Blocks
Large volume and low weight – the core competences of Fat Albert have not changed.  A robust snake skin protects it from sharp rocks that otherwise quickly tear apart the side walls of lightweight and fast racing tires. „Snakeskin is one of the most effective discoveries we ever made for Mountainbikes“, added Markus Hachmeyer. The 50 grams weight penalty is well worthwhile.

New nano-sized polymers and fillers have greatly improved rolling resistance. The hitherto „gigantic“ 200 nanometer particles have been reduced to only ten nanometers i.e. 0,00001 millimeter. This reduction has two benefits: The internal friction is reduced that in turn reduces rolling resistance. And because many smaller particles present a greater surface area than fewer larger ones – the superior contact area provides better grip. The result is an outstanding Allround-Compound for the tread center, beneath which lies an extremely easy rolling base compound and to the sides lie grippy shoulder compounds. „All three complete the unique Triple Nano-Compound“, stressed Hachmeyer.

Additional grip is generated by the, so named, U-Blocks. Schwalbe technicians positioned these specially shaped lugs against the direction of rotation and so turned on its head the traditional thinking that lugs should always run with the wheel rotation. The U-Shape lugs and their positioning develops even more cornering grip i.e.: It is natural for the tire to want to wander out of curves. U-Blocks prevent this by lifting the tire by the nature of their forward-facing, half-open design. The surprising effect is less under-steer and more stability in...

Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire Test

Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire Test

(12/15/2008)
By: R. Cunningham

Schwalbe’s latest lightweight tire is a sleeper. The Rocket Ron (all of Schwalbe’s mountain bike tires are named after people) is a large-volume, 127 thread-per-inch casing tire with tread pattern that uses small, generously-spaced traction blocks. Rocket Ron tires are intended to be lightweight racing clinchers and thus are available in a 2.1 and   2.25 inch size, but we are more interested in Schwalbe’s jumbo-sized, 2.4-inch Rocket Ron that is intended for aggressive cross-country trail riding.

Weights are posted at 410 grams for the 2.1-inch, 445 grams in the 2.25 size, with our 2.4-inch test tires coming in at a respectable, 530 grams. In reverse of prevalent tire weights, Schwalbe’s weights are actually conservative, with most of its tires weighing in under their claims.  Expect to pay between 65 to 70 dollars US per tire.

For those who don’t know Schwalbe , they are a German tire maker that lives and breathes rubber compounds and casing technology. For instance, the Rocket Ron has a three-durometer tread, with a harder rubber on the top of the crown for durability, and a softer rubber for the cornering blocks. Under the tread, is a special rubber compound designed specifically to reduce rolling resistance that keeps the tire flexing in a uniform manner. The rubber itself uses a nano-carbon particle filler that is 20-times smaller than its previous “nano” filler. In case you are curious, a single particle averages 10 nanometers (0.00001 millimeters). The smaller carbon filler allows the tire to flex, while retaining the toughness of the rubber.
Schwalbe developed a slotted tread block called a “U-Block” that aids cornering. The slot faces the direction of travel, which seems counter-intuitive, but testing shows that this configuration provides more cornering grip.

TRAIL TESTING THE ROCKET RON
I used a Pivot Mach 5 dual-suspension bike with DT Swiss cross-country wheels for the test. Some sections were doubletrack, with the remaining 70-percent, singletrack. Traction conditions were hard-pack with medium moisture content, dry gravel, some deep sand, and a stretch of imbedded stones in running water—pretty much the ultimate test track for a tire. Presures were tried at 35, 30 and 25psi, with the best results ending up between 30 and 25psi.

Schwalbe’s big 2.4-inch Rocket Ron rolls remarkably easily for its size, and steers with the dexterity of top-performing 2.5-inch cross-country tire. Traction is, to say the least, “ample” for climbing, and thus there is no need to keep the rear tire perfectly weighted, even up steep grades. The Rocket Ron’s tire tread and rubber compound is grippy enough to handle any trail surface. The tread blocks are small, but there are enough...
